Associative Rheology Modifier



Introduction

When stress is applied on some matter there occur changes in the structure or the flow of the matter. The study of these changes under the influence of applied stress is known as Rheology.Rheology Modifier is an additive which is used to modify the viscosity of any material. They are also known as Thickening Agent.

Rheology Modifiers are classified as Associative and Non Associative Rheology Modifier. Non Associative Rheology Modifiers are the ones which have been used in traditional times. These include hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) which contributes desired body in paints, cosmetics and are also used in ideal household products. It also maintains water retention at various levels. But now in modern times we use one of the most common Associative Modifier i.e popularly known as Hydrophobically Modified Alkali Soluble Emulsions which exhibit relatively low solution viscosity. They provide coatings a better rheology. They usually control the viscosity of acqueous systems. Some of the Rheology Modifier like alginate, xanthan, guar, dextran, methylcellulose, carboxymethyl are used in foods, cosmetics, paints, drug delivery, oil and gas recovery. Associative Rheology Modifier is also known as Water Based Rheology Modifier.

Functionality of Rheology Modifier
The primary or the main function of Rheology Modifier or Thickening Agent is to increase the viscosity of the coatings application to which it is added. It is added in small amount in coating applications. It also improves the viscosity of fabric and home appliances. Secondary function of Rheology Modifiers includes the protective colloidal action and it also improves pigment suspension.Rheology Modifiers have come in use in order to provide significant help to formulators and also improves the performance of water based and solvent based coatings. Main objective of Rheology Modifier is to achieve the flow consistency of the product. Rheology Modifiers are commonly used in wide range of applications. Rheology Modifiers have been commonly used in coatings, chemicals, paints, inks, polymers, concrete, cement, food, clay, personal care etc.
